Common Core Content Standards Addressed
When
counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each
object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only
one object.
Understand
that the last number name said tells the number of objects counted. The number
of objects is the same regardless of their arrangement or the order in which
they were counted.
Use addition
and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding
to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns
in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol
for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Common Core Standards for Mathematical
Practice
Understand
the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to
cardinality.
*Students should make sense of the story line
and understand the problem. The mathematics behind this story is: as the one
duck is stuck in the muck, it took more than 1 animal in the forest to come
help the duck come out. At the beginning of the story it started with 2 animals
trying to help the duck to all 10 different animals working together to help
the duck come out of the muck.
Summary:
As one duck was
walking down by the marsh, by the sleepy, slimy marsh, he gets stuck in the
muck. While calling out for Help!, different forest animals came to help. It
started with two fish saying We Can! We Can! But the one duck was still stuck
in the muck. As the duck kept calling
for Help! Help! the number of animals kept increasing. Next came three moose
but still no luck in getting the duck out. Could you guess how many animals did
it take to help the duck come out of the muck, down by the deep green marsh?
Rating:
I give this book a
5. Not only does it include math, but there are many different ways to use math
after reading this book. There is also science vocabulary as well as science
activities that can be used in the classroom. It can also go towards a writing
activity and writing components could be used; like, making a prediction
setting, conflict, characterization and solution. One Duck Stuck isn’t just a cute
book but its colorful pictures and repetition of words makes it more readable
and students will be able to be engaged and interested in it.
Classroom Ideas:
Count and compare animals: Cut two large circles from brown construction paper
or brown felt to represent muck. Gather a variety of small toy animals to use
as counters. Ask one child to count a designated number of animals to put in
one of the circles. Ask another child to count a designated number of animals
to put in the other circle. Count the animals on each circle and compare the
quantities. Which circle of muck has the most animals?
*
If you want it to be more of a challenge for example for 1st grades,
this activity could be comparing the number of animals using the greater, less
than or equal sign.
Addition and Subtraction: Extend learning to help children create and solve
word problems. “If three animals got stuck in the muck and one got out, how
many animals would be left stuck in the muck?” “If there were two animals stuck
in the muck and one more tried to help them get out, but got stuck, how many
animals are now stuck in the muck?” Use the manipulative such as toy animals or
blocks to help children visualize the concept. *If you want it to be more of a challenge, teacher could make up a greater number than 10 and instead of students using manipulative, they could draw circles and cross out how many left.
